Why Commission a Stained Glass Window?

Stained glass is a craft on the red list of endangered crafts & investing in it is crucial for keeping traditional skills alive. A custom stained glass window not only adds aesthetic value

but also preserves the intricate art form of stained glass making.

This ancient craft is revered for its ability to transform light and add a dynamic, colourful element to any setting.

The Commissioning Process

Commissioning a new stained glass window is an exciting journey for both the client and the artist. The best results stem from a collaborative relationship where creativity flourishes.

Here’s an outline of the process:

1. Creating a Brief: Often a client will have a theme around which they would like their window to be made. It is useful to communicate these thoughts and ideas with the artist so they can be woven into the final design.

2.  Site Visit: A site visit allows for a thorough appreciation of the space and helps in crafting a design that complements the environment.

3. Design Phase: When both client and artists have agreed to work together, the initial deposit is paid for the drawing up of a detailed design. This is a very important and time consuming phase. The artist will submit the design to the client, showcasing a clear vision of how the window will be made and the types of glass that will be used. Samples of glass can be shown to give an idea of the attainable colours and textures.

4. Production: Once the design is approved and finalised, a life-size cartoon or cut-line is produced before work begins on the actual window.
